Radical Self Reliance

We are heading to Burning Man in just a few days… Excited doesn’t even come close to describing how I feel. Couple that with anxiety and fear at not having what I need… forgetting some major essential (Which, I undoubtedly will) thusly ruining everything, and you might have a small clue. All of my friends who have been and who I am going to be camping with, assure me that we will all help each other out. That nobody’s trip will we devastated by a forgotten toiletry.

Burning Man has ten principals. One of which, is Radical Self Reliance. What does that mean? In layman’s terms, it means; get your shit together and show up with it. Bring what you need. Don’t expect your neighbors to care for you. Handle your business. That’s not to say that people will not help you. Burning Man is, after all, an economy based on gifting but, if everyone shows up without… you can’t gift what you don’t have.

Anyone who knows me well, has probably heard me say that camping isn’t really my “thing”. I’m not a priss and I’m not afraid to get dirty, I just don’t want a vacation that feels like work. I love nature and I’ll rough it… collaborative roughing it is more my speed, though. You know, the whole “takes a village” bit. I am independent in nature so, this principal feels good to me… I mean, my husband is pretty much banking on me having my poop in a group and that goes for the comfort of us BOTH. It’s a little bit of pressure! Proper planning will ensure that we get to enjoy this trip and each other.

No kids, no responsibility, no internet, no cell service… nothing but us (and our 30 gallons of water and all the essentials that we can cram into our Prius) on the playa. The magic awaits!

  1. I am sure you will forget something but when the first people to visit this are came through I’m sure they didn’t have it either. Just reading your posts spiked my renewed interest in this and I believe our family will be heading out there one of these years soon. It will be fun be away from life and who knows…maybe when you get back all the problems of the world will be solved, news stations will be replaced by cooking shows “because they have nothing dreadful to be reporting on” and there will be a note on your door saying they have discovered oil on your property and they have a hefty sum of $$ waiting for you. Probably not but I bet your experiences will be worth more than all of the above. Have fun my Friends.

I sure will! And all of those “possibilities” would be fantastic! Hahaha I’m sure it will seem like the worlds problems are cured… While we’re there 🙂

No worries, there! I have a pouch thingy to keep the playa out of my camera while keeping my camera utterly accessible 🙂
