Ok, so I’m totally knocking off the Whole Foods right now BUT, in true Swearing Mom fashion I am giving it my own bit of sass. This fantastic juice is an amazing jump start in the morning! It’s sweet and tangy and spicy! Everything in it has a specific health benefit which is why Whole Foods calls it The Wellness Shot. Their version is much more sour and not nearly as spicy as mine. On the rare occasion that I order one from their juice bar, I ask for double the apple, half the lemon and triple the other spices!By bringing up the apple, I am able to balance the intensity of the spices with the additional sweetness, and it’s just how I like it! You can play with the ratios and find your best quantities, but I think you might keep this juice. It’s SOOOOOO good!
You will need the following:
- 8 apples
- 2 lemons, peel removed
- 3-5 inches from a hand of fresh ginger
- turmeric powder
- cayenne powder
Run all ingredients, except turmeric and cayenne through a juicer. I like to store mine in small mason jars that are easy to grab n’ go, but you can store in one large container if you like. Once you have it poured into containers, add turmeric and cayenne. I use the 4oz mason jars and about a teaspoon each of cayenne and turmeric per. If you were to spice the entire recipe in one you would use a table spoon plus one teaspoon of each.
Lets talk about the benefits now.
We have apples, and you know, an apple a day they say! They are full of vitamins and minerals like A, C, potassium, magnesium etc. Plus, they taste freaking delicious. I prefer Pink Ladies over all other varieties, but your favorite will do here.
Lemon. Lemon juice helps alkalize your body, for starters. I drink half a lemon squeezed into warm water each morning. They are also full of vitamins A & C and have a significant amount of potassium as well.
Ginger. Ginger is so full of health benefits that I will barely cover the tip of the iceberg here. Known for keeping nausea at bay, ginger can be used to prevent morning sickness and motion sickness. Some studies say that it’s benefits are far superior to dramamine even. It is also an effective digestive aid and is known to be anti-inflammatory which could be beneficial to sufferers of various kinds of join pain. Further, there are studies linking the benefits of ginger to cell death in certain cancer cells. I am not going to pretend to know the science behind this stuff, but it’s good and much like the apple, it’s freaking delicious.
Cayenne. Another power house! So many benefits including, promoting heart and vascular health and naturally increasing your metabolism There are so many more benefits, you should look into them on the Google. Do it!
Turmeric: This might be the mother of all! Turmeric has long been used in asian cultures as a go to “cure-all”. It is a very common ingredient in Ayurvedic medicine and is a powerful anti-inflammatory it can be applied directly to a wound or ingested for it’s benefits. Studies are showing turmeric to inhibit cell growth in a variety of cancers such as breast, colon and Childhood Leukemia. It is also said to improve liver function. Let’s all get a little more turmeric in our lives, shall we?
Ok, now that you know why and now that you know it’s delicious, add a little shot of wellness into your daily routine. Happy juicing!
